Cobb Hill Construction Inc.

New Hampshire’s commercial and residential construction company Concord-based Cobb Hill Construction Inc. (Cobb Hill) has been in business since 1986, when Tom Avallone established the company to serve the residential remodeling market in New Hampshire. Jerry Kingwill, current owner and president of Cobb Hill, joined the business in 1988, his first foray into the construction industry. “Tom founded the business with his brother-in-law,” Kingwill recounts. “They started off providing turnkey remodeling services, including everything but electrical and plumbing performed in-house. After the recession of the late 1980s, new business came to a standstill. The company transitioned into the commercial sector, hiring the first commercial project manager in the early 1990s.” In 2015, the business has grown and diversified significantly. After more than 28 years in business, Cobb Hill has become a reputable contractor for new construction, remodeling and historical renovation work in both the residential and commercial sectors. With a total of 33 employees, Cobb Hill has four project managers with differing specialties; one is focused on the senior living market, another specializes in commercial work with a niche in dental office construction and renovation. The third focuses on high-end residential work and the last oversees specialty service-related projects and maintenance work. “Our mantra is that we do not want to excel at just one thing,” Kingwill says. “We have not really declined the opportunity to work for anyone so long as the relationship we build is good. In the last six years, we have found a niche market with dental offices. We do three to five offices a year. Our team also does a considerable amount of residential... read more

Lead And Asbestos-Ridden ‘Alcatraz Of The East’ For Lease

(via NHNPR) The US Navy will offer for lease the former Naval Prison on the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The Navy has twice before sought private-sector redevelopment of the old Naval Prison, which closed in 1974.  It was built in 1908, and has been called the “Alcatraz of the East.” The medieval-looking multi-story building is 265,000 square feet and has 11 and a half acres of waterfront land. The new tenant would be responsible for ensuring structural stability in the now-dilapidated building, and cleaning up hazardous waste, including asbestos and lead paint. Interested tenants can learn more in early April at a scheduled forum in Eliot, Maine. A formal RFQ, or bidding process, will begin thereafter.  More information on the building and forum is available on the Navy... read more

Contractors Renovate Home of Boston Bombing Victim

[source: www.abc.org] Many lives were forever changed in April 2013 due to the tragic Boston Marathon bombing, including the Bauman family, whose son Jeff Bauman was severely injured on the day of the race. While Bauman focused on adjusting to life in a wheelchair, the community came together to make the transition a little
bit easier. It all started with Cobb Hill Construction, Concord, N.H., which began brainstorming ways to help. After reaching out to friends, family and a local church, an idea that started as simply adding a wheelchair ramp to Bauman’s childhood home turned into a completely free renovation. Soon after the designs and plans were drawn, companies from New Hampshire and Massachusetts were signing up to be a part of this community-wide project. Construction on the home began last August with the help of EnviroVantage, which jumped in as soon as it heard about the project. The environmental and  specialty services contractor removed asbestos siding and flooring, assisted in removing the attached storage area and screened-in porch, and brought in a few of its subcontractors to perform other initial work necessary for the renovation. “I enjoy helping people in need, assisting in coordination, making a difference and bringing people I know together for a good cause,” says EnviroVantage Project Manager/Estimator Troy Purington. More than 75 other companies donated materials, time and labor to the project, which included the addition of a wheelchair-accessible bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Donations ranged from siding and roofing materials to painting services, concrete and foundation forms, furnace installation, bathroom fixtures, drywall, plumbing and more. A full list of participating companies is available at www.cobbhill.com. The renovations,... read more

A Guide for Citizens Affected by Mold and Moisture in New Hampshire Buildings

The American Lung Association released the Standard of Care for the New Hampshire Mold Industry – A Guide for Citizens Affected by Mold and Moisture in New Hampshire Buildings. EnviroVantage is pleased to offer this guide as a free download on their website. Excerpt from the guide: In 2008, a group of New Hampshire Legislators, business leaders, and heath administrators came together with the same concern: there are currently no laws in place to protect the citizens of NH when it comes to mold and poor indoor air quality. This group of professionals was motivated to find a way to get mold legislation on the books, and they worked together for several months to write and propose a bill to the NH House of Representatives. In 2009, House Bill 4821, relative to mold assessment, testing, and remediation and sponsored by NH Representatives French, Beck, Petterson, and Merrill, was presented on the floor and did not pass, losing by just one vote. Not ready to give up, the group approached the lawmakers involved, who suggested that the group form a “Mold Task Force,” with the goal of creating a Standard of Care for the NH Mold Industry. The New Hampshire Mold Task Force (NHMTF) was formed, and the group spent the next several months creating what is now this document. The goal of this Standard of Care is to provide information to the citizens of NH not only about the causes of indoor mold, the possible health risks, and prevention measures, but also about the Mold Industry in general, including best practices and tips for hiring consultants and contractors.
