We responded to Hurricane Rita (2005) by rushing to Beaumont, TX knowing only that we could help with water extraction and mold remediation. We loaded a trailer with dehumidifiers, blowers etc., attached it to a van with an incredible water vacuum system and drove for 3 days-no contracts, no leads, just trust.
The closest location (25 miles) to Beaumont with electricity, running water and lodging was Kountze, TX. EnviroVantage President, Scott Knightly, had flown to Texas and found Kountze, presented the Super 8 Motel owner and his insurance representatives our remediation plan to restore full operation and earned the contract. The Super 8 became our home, our first project and our office for the next 2 months.
Fifty rooms on the east side of the building were heavily impacted by the rain-carpets, wallboard, ceilings, furniture all had severe weather damage. We shared the motel with 50 electric power contractors. Their shifts worked 24/7. When they went to work restoring the power grid in East Texas, we went to work on their rooms. We saved the carpet, replaced the sheetrock and treated the mold-even removing 3″ mushrooms growing out of the carpet. Then we moved on to other disasters in the community.
Most memorable to us was the local dining option-a Subway in the only gas station with power for 15 miles. Everyone in town (including us) stood in line to be handed a sandwich, whatever was available-morning, noon and night.
