Mold typically occurs in basements and crawl spaces because of unregulated humidity levels or water intrusion. All basements should have a self-draining dehumidifier that’s capable of maintaining a relative humidity of 35-50%. Consistent humidity above 60% will result in mold growth on wood, paper, leather, and other organic materials.
The most common types of basement mold is Aspergillus/Penicillium. These two types of mold have very similar structures and are commonly found on mold reports and listed together.

Mold is a naturally occurring fungi found all around us, both indoors and out. It can come in a variety of colors, but most types of mold are black, green, or gray. If you can see mold, regardless of its color, we encourage you to contact us directly, and we’ll be happy to come out and inspect the area — free of charge.
If you suspect you have mold — or you don’t have any visual signs but may suffer from allergy-like symptoms that can’t be explained — you can opt to hire a certified mold inspector. This expert will conduct scientific air sampling and collect samples that will be analyzed in a lab. You aren’t required to go through a mold inspector first, but it can be helpful to do so if you don’t see any visual signs of growth.
There are many gaps between the basement and first living level of a home that allow air to penetrate more readily between the two floors. If there are mold spores in the basement, there is a good chance they can make it to the first floor, though it’s unlikely they will spread beyond that level.
High levels of mold can be dangerous, which is why it’s important to identify and remove the problem as soon as possible. Certain mold spores — especially those with an elevated concentration — have been found to cause health problems such as a runny or blocked nose, watery or red eyes, a dry cough, skin rashes, a sore throat, sinusitis, wheezing, asthma, and/or pneumonia.
Mold thrives on moisture, so it’s essential to prevent and stop any leaks or water intrusion. We also recommend investing in a self-draining dehumidifier that’s capable of maintaining a relative humidity of 35-50%.
Also, it’s important to carefully manage the items that you store in the basement. All items should be stored in plastic containers on elevated plastic or metal racks. Avoid cardboard or wood, which are organic and can serve as breeding grounds for mold. If you insist on cardboard boxes, make sure they are elevated and do not contact with the basement floor.

Basement mold removal cost will depend on two factors: the location of the mold in your home and how much is present. Costs can range anywhere from $1,500 to $50,000 (for a complete house gut), so it’s best to contact us about your specific situation.
If mold is visible, the inspection process is not necessarily a long one. We can come to your home (free of charge), look at the area, and determine the next steps for mold removal. All of this can take place within a day or two, and we can schedule mold removal for the following day or within the next week, depending on our work load.
